Considerations BEFORE buying a Newfoundland...
Breed Standard
What is a breed standard? A breed standard is a written description of what a dog of any given breed should look like and what its function is. It is this standard that conformation judges use in the breed ring to judge dogs, and it is the key to breeding dogs that look and act a certain way from one generation to the next.
Because many breed standards were based on assumptions by the originators of the standard, many of the descriptions are open to interpretation. It is the duty of the parent club - in our case the Newfoundland Club of America - to maintain the standard and to update it as necessary. The AKC maintains and publishes the breed standards for all recognized AKC breeds and periodically the AKC requires parent clubs to update their standards to fit standardized criteria or formats for ease of judges' education.
